How verification works
What “Verified” Means on bmborneo.com
On bmborneo.com, trust is a core principle. A “Verified” badge is not a decorative sticker, an automated algorithm output, or a paid advertising perk.
A Verified badge represents a specific, documented check conducted by human staff.
Core Verification Principles:
- Never Automatic: Verification is never granted automatically by software, inferred from social media followers, or assumed from online scrapers.
- Never Purchased: You cannot buy a “Verified” badge. Paid advertising placements (such as “Featured” listings or “Sponsored” keyword slots) are separate commercial placements and do not confer verified status.
- Specific Checked Facts: Every verification level corresponds to a defined administrative check (for example, “Phone confirmed by staff” or “Business registration seen”).
- Clear Tooltips: When you view a verified listing, hovering over or tapping the badge displays a tooltip stating exactly what staff checked and when.
What “Verified” Does NOT Mean
To avoid false expectations, it is equally important to understand what a Verified badge does not represent:
- Not a Quality Endorsement: A badge does not mean bmborneo.com endorses, recommends, or rates the quality of the business’s products, craftsmanship, or customer service.
- Not a Financial Guarantee: A badge does not provide any financial warranty, transaction insurance, or indemnity against loss.
- Not a Safety Warranty: Verification does not guarantee that a business or seller will never make a mistake or engage in a commercial dispute.
- Not Permanent: If a business changes ownership, fails a periodic review, or receives substantiated complaints, its verification status can be revoked immediately by staff.
Users must always exercise normal consumer judgment, inspect items before purchase, and check customer reviews.
How Staff Perform Verification
Verification levels are configured and maintained by authorized administrators in the site backend (Directory > Verification). Only staff with moderation capabilities can assign, change, or remove a verification level.
Typical Verification Checks:
- Telephone Confirmation:
- A staff member calls the public telephone number listed on the business profile.
- Staff confirm that the number reaches the genuine business, verify basic operating hours, and confirm the business is actively operating.
- Official Business Registration Review:
- Staff inspect official government registration certificates (e.g. Registry of Companies/Business Names, SSM certificate, or local municipal council trading licence).
- Staff verify that the legal business name, registration number, and registered address align with the profile.
- Physical Address / Storefront Check:
- Where local checks are performed, staff verify the existence of a physical storefront, commercial signage, or operating premises.
Transparent Audit Trails
Every verification action is permanently recorded in an internal system log (bm_verif_log), documenting:
- The exact staff member who made the decision
- The date and timestamp of the action
- The previous verification state and the new level assigned
If a listing fails a subsequent check or violates site terms, staff set the status to “None”, which instantly removes the badge and tooltip across all cards, search results, and profile pages.
The Platform Wording Rule
bmborneo.com adheres to a strict editorial wording standard to ensure complete honesty:
The Wording Rule: Site pages, category headings, and search results only use the word “Verified” (for example, “Verified Businesses in Central District”) when staff have actually verified listings in that specific directory section.
Until staff have conducted checks and verified real listings, the platform uses neutral, truthful headings such as “Businesses in Brunei“.
This policy ensures that visitors are never misled by marketing claims that the underlying data cannot support.
How Business Owners Can Apply for Verification
Legitimate business owners who wish to obtain a Verified badge for their listing can initiate the process through the following steps:
- Claim Your Listing: Ensure you have successfully claimed ownership of your business profile so that it appears in your member dashboard.
- Submit a Verification Request: Open a support ticket from your dashboard (Support, topic “Claiming a listing”) and tell us the name of your business.
- Provide Supporting Documentation:
Depending on the level of verification requested, you will be asked to provide:- A business registration certificate or licence for the business, a document that shows the business address (for example a utility bill), and the identity card of the owner. We may ask for more if something does not match.
- Documents you send through the support desk are kept with your ticket and deleted 24 months after the last message in it. Documents sent with an ownership claim are deleted 30 days after we decide the claim (see the Privacy Policy).
- Please send only what we ask for. Do not send documents that show more than we need.
- Staff Review: Our moderation team will review your submitted documents, perform telephone checks, and update your profile upon successful verification.
