Safe trade guidelines
Trading Safely in Brunei
The Buy & Sell classifieds section of bmborneo.com connects local community members across Brunei.
While the vast majority of local transactions are honest and friendly, trading with people you do not know requires common sense and vigilance. bmborneo.com is an advertising directory; we do not process payments, verify seller inventories, or hold funds in escrow.
We do not own, inspect or deliver the items advertised, and we do not check who sellers are. If something goes wrong with a purchase, your claim is against the seller, not against bmborneo.com. Follow these simple, practical rules to keep your transactions safe and secure.
Always Meet in Busy Public Places
When arranging to inspect an item or complete a sale:
- Choose Daylight and Crowds: Always meet during daylight hours in a busy, well-lit, public location with high foot traffic. Recommended venues include:
- Shopping mall concourses or food courts
- Busy cafes or fast-food restaurants
- Public transport stations or commercial bank lobbies
- Never Meet in Secluded Spots: Never agree to meet in deserted car parks, quiet alleyways, industrial estates, or roadside laybys after dark.
- Do Not Invite Strangers Home: Avoid meeting at your private residence or entering a stranger’s home for general consumer items. If selling heavy or bulky furniture that requires home collection, ensure you have several family members or friends present.
- Bring Company: Bring a friend or family member along to any meetup.
- Tell Someone Your Plans: Always let someone know where you are going, who you are meeting, their phone number, and when you expect to return.
- Trust Your Instincts: If a buyer or seller insists on changing the meeting location to an isolated spot at the last minute, cancel the meeting immediately.
Public Meetup Places
The site can show a short list of public places that sellers suggest for handovers. This feature is switched off until our staff have checked real places in your area, so no places are listed yet.
When it is switched on, a place on the list is a suggestion only. Staff listing a place does not mean it is safe, and it does not make us responsible for what happens there. Section 2 still applies.
Inspect and Test Items Thoroughly Before Paying
Never pay for an item based solely on photos or descriptions:
- Examine in Person: Inspect the item carefully in good lighting before handing over any money.
- Test All Functions:
- For mobile phones and laptops: Power the device on, check battery health, test Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, insert your SIM card to verify network connectivity, and ensure all cloud/factory accounts have been completely signed out and reset.
- For electronic appliances: Plug the item in or insert batteries to verify it functions properly.
- For vehicles and motorcycles: Inspect mechanical parts, tyres, and documentation in daylight; verify the chassis and engine numbers match the vehicle registration card; and conduct a test drive accompanied by the seller in a safe, public area.
- Check for Authenticity: For designer goods, watches, or branded items, inspect serial numbers, receipts, and packaging.
- Do Not Be Rushed: A legitimate seller will gladly give you time to inspect an item. If a seller rushes you, pressures you, or becomes evasive when you test functionality, do not proceed with the purchase.
Safe Payment Practices: No Advance Payments
Payment security is the most critical element of safe classified trading:
- No Advance Payments or Deposits: NEVER send money in advance to someone you have not met in person, no matter how convincing their story sounds. This includes “reservation deposits”, “courier holding fees”, or “shipping advances”.
- Face-to-Face Payment Only: Pay only after you have met the seller, inspected the item, and taken physical possession.
- Approved Payment Methods:
- Cash in Person: Clean, direct cash exchanged at the time of handover.
- Instant Local Mobile Bank Transfer: A peer-to-peer transfer via your local banking app completed face-to-face at the meetup.
- Verify Transfers in Your Own App: If you are a seller receiving a bank transfer, check your own mobile banking app to verify that the funds have cleared into your account. Never rely on a screenshot, forwarded SMS, or email shown by the buyer, as these can easily be fabricated.
- Never Use Untraceable Methods: Never agree to payments using wire transfers (such as Western Union), cryptocurrency, international remittances, or prepaid gift cards. Once sent, these funds cannot be recovered.
How to Spot Common Classified Scams
Be alert to common tactics used by fraudulent actors:
- Unrealistic Prices: An expensive smartphone, camera, or motorcycle advertised at a fraction of its true market value is almost always a scam, counterfeit, or stolen property.
- The “Out of Town” or “Working Offshore” Seller: A seller claims they are currently in another city or working offshore, but promises to mail the item to you as soon as you transfer a deposit.
- Third-Party Courier Services: A buyer insists on using a “courier service” that allegedly collects the item and delivers cash, but asks you to pay an insurance fee or deposit first.
- Overpayment and Refund Requests: A buyer sends a fake payment confirmation showing they paid more than your asking price, and urgently requests that you refund the excess via bank transfer.
- Communication Moving Away from the Platform: Scammers often urge you to communicate via third-party messaging apps immediately and avoid standard safety channels.
How to Report Suspicious Listings or Scams
If you see an ad that appears fraudulent, misleading, or abusive, please report it immediately to help protect the community:
- Locate the Report Link: Open the suspicious business profile or classified ad.
- Open the Report Form: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Report this listing” toggle.
- Submit Details:
- Select the most appropriate reason from the list (such as “Scam or fraud”, “Offensive or illegal content”, “Wrong or outdated information” or “Permanently closed”; the list is set by staff and may change).
- Add a brief note explaining why the listing is suspicious.
- Click Send report.
- Moderator Review: Your report goes into our moderation queue (
Directory > Reports). Our staff review reported listings and may unpublish, edit, or suspend accounts found to violate our terms. We may not reply to every report. - Criminal Reporting: If you have been a victim of financial theft or fraud, file a police report with your local law enforcement agency: in an emergency call your local emergency number (in Brunei Darussalam: 993 police, 991 ambulance, 995 fire and rescue). For a scam that is not an emergency, report it at your nearest police station and tell us the address of the listing or ad.
